Who are Hope Whitby?
Hope Whitby is a Missional Community. So, is that different from a "Church" you ask!!? Well, we don't have a building of our own (we don't want the burden of bricks), we don't meet together on a Sunday(although there are some good churches that do) We try to meet people where they are. Whether that be in a cafe, a pub, a house or a church building.
We are trying to give everyone a chance to experience the Christian Faith in a way that they can understand. When you look around at what we do, you'll realise that we have lots of different things going on. We like to make people have a sense of belonging, that why a number of our groups are in houses. We think its important to have a social area, where people can come and relax and enjoy an evening with friends like the Hope Hub . And when you are ready, we have a once a month contemporary service called #Gathering.
I guess our mission can be summed up by the words of Jesus "A new command I give you: Love one another, as I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" John 13:34-35
We have an evangelical-charismatic faith and take our basis of faith from the Evangelical Alliance
Meet the team
Our Leadership team works on a low control and high accountability model. We currently have 2 lead Pastors and 6 Missional Community Leaders.
Leigh and Bec Coates- Senior Leaders
Leigh is our Pioneer Pastor - attended Lythe, Caedmon and Whitby College, so he certainly knows the town and surrounding areas. "My passion is to move into new territories and make "church" accessible to all. I love to take risks, mentor and preach. After God, my family is key to me and then the mission. Setting up Hope Whitby in my own town is both a privilege and hard work."
Bec is our Community Pastor - attended East Whitby, Eskdale and Whitby College, she is part of the 'Eastside' furniture!! "My heart is for the welfare of all the people of Whitby and the surrounding areas. Leigh pushes the boundaries and I look after them. Family time is important to me and my ministry starts with them. I love to keep fit. My aim is to sustain and equip the people within the Missional Community."
Janet Robson - Evangelist & Town Cluster Leader
Janet was part of the original team of Hope Whitby "Being a local girl attending West Cliff, Whitby West and Whitby School, my heart cries out for this town. I'm passionate about people knowing Jesus and at Hope Whitby, we've taken some big risks to get to where we are but the bible says this in Acts 5:38-39 "Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”
I love walking my dog and find that walking on the west cliff, I find I am as close to God there as anywhere. I also love my motorbikes and I combine that with my love for Jesus in the CMA (Christian Motorcycle Association)
Rebecca Pearson - Pastoral & Eastside Cluster Leader
If you're from Whitby then you'll probably know 'Becks'. Brought up on the Eastside of Town she has a huge passion for the area and the people within it. Becks has come to faith within Hope Whitby and loves to see the Church being missional.
Being on the council, Becks knows this town better than most and longs to see community in action.
Kath Charter - Pastoral & Fylingdales Cluster Leader
Kath is a vibrant leader (although she would say she's not) Kath has cared for her community down in Fylingthorpe for decades and is still keen to see a community grow. She has a natural ability with all ages but is particularly keen to see the next generation of young people go into the church. She puts this into action by volunteering to lead HYP and Thorpe Youth on a Monday!
Mike Holloway - Youth & Kids Project Leader
Mike family roots are in Liverpool (you'd never know because he never talks about it) but being a Whitby lad, he has flourished working with our young people at HYP & HI:5. Mike came to faith within Hope Whitby and has been part of the Church for a number of years now.
He is a part of the Worship team too, and working for the Ambulance service, he volunteers as a leader when he is not on shift.
Elizabeth Ibbetson - Pastoral & Young at heart Leader
"Although now retired, I still see myself as more of a “recycled teenager”, keen to keep up with the challenges set by my children and grandchildren!
After being part of the Methodist church all of my life, I feel that being involved with Hope Whitby has opened my eyes to a new, more relevant way of the church. This has given me a wonderful, God-given opportunity to put my deepened faith into practice outside the church building"
Jon Charter - Outreach & Events Leader
Jon was born and raised in Fylingthorpe (Thorpe). Trained at Cliff College and has had a number of roles within the Methodist Church, he has really captured the essence of the Missional Community, which bears a lot of similarities to the movement started by John Wesley.
Jon has a real passion to see the church move beyond its known boundaries. Gifted as an evangelist, he would like to see the communities grow with people from all backgrounds.
