So, there is a song by New Wine call ‘Good, Good Father’ and I just can’t get it out of my head. It is a simple song but the words certainly speak into my life and probably a generation that I am a part of.
The chorus goes like this:
“You're a good good father
It's who you are, it's who you are, it's who you are
And I'm loved by you
It's who I am, it's who I am, it's who I am”
Coming from an atheistic background, one of the hardest concepts of Christianity for me was that God loved me even in my darkest hour and no matter what I had done, He still gave up everything on the cross for me. Actually when I got off my high horse and accepted this, it has become whom I am. No longer, did I have to impress any one, including my earthly father but I just had to accept that God loved me and I could not change that.
Now just to put you in the picture, I never had that father figure as a young boy, my dad thought alcohol and socialising was more important than family. I had many father figures around me, a step dad that took me on as his own, but the love of a heavenly father just cannot be explained in words until you experience it for yourself.
Jesus said “And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.” Matt 23:9
Jesus even goes further than that by calling God “abba” which means daddy, a term of endearment that the religious rulers of the time hated.
I am now defined by my relationship with my heavenly father and not by the way others see me. Jesus says, “We (believers) will be known by the way we love each other” And so we should be, we have a love that surpasses all understanding and it should be on display to the world.
If you have never had that father figure or had bad examples of one, then why not get in touch. Maybe you are from a broken family as I was, God can restore that. I now have a family much wider than my own blood. Jesus invites us to be co-heirs with Him (brother and sisters). Surely something worth looking into? I know it was one of the main draws for me.
Take care, Leigh
